Colt Python aka Combat Magnum
Arguably the best revolver ever made, the Colt Python enjoys recognition in movie and video game culture.
The Colt Python aka ‘Combat Magnum’ is a .357 Magnum revolver and is often referred to as “the finest production revolver ever made”. The Python was introduced in 1955 by Colt’s Manufacturing Company in the US, and was originally designed to be a large-frame .38 Special revolver, but was revised to use a .357 Magnum cartridge instead.
The Python became a popular choice for law enforcement officers, offering superb accuracy coupled with significantly improved stopping power over a standard .38 Special. Available in a plethora of barrel lengths (2.5, 3, 6 and 8in), it was the 6in model that proved to be the most popular.
However, the 9mm semi-automatic handgun eventually became more popular in law enforcement circles, with models like the Beretta 92F and Glock 17 providing many more rounds between reloads.
Nowadays Python is very popular within firearm collectors. The ‘Combat Magnum’ is an iconic weapon and is popularised as a high-power handgun in many movies and video games.
